Trailer Trash – A Single Shot Greeting from Tim Buckley, The English Teacher

trailertrashI haven’t one one of these things for a while because, frankly, there haven’t been too many intriguing trailers released that might have gone under the radar but as we enter the year’s dry period the promotions begin for the next tropical trend. Here are the trailers for a couple features from the edge of that formation that caught my eye: Greetings From Tim Buckley, A Single Shot and The English Patient Teacher. See them after the jump…

Trailer Trash: Now You See Me, Broken, At Jimmy’s End.

I think you get the gist by now; here are three interesting new movie trailers that you might otherwise have missed. This time though there is a bit of a difference: firstly, i’ve already seen one of the films but as it is one of my favorites for the year I feel that pushing it here is necessary; Secondly, one of these trailers isn’t for what one would traditionally call a film (I believe that it’s only thirty minutes long and a part of a longer series, but information is hard to come by) the name behind it though was enough to get me intrigued. The third? It just looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

Trailer Trash: Lincoln

If the name in the title doesn’t sell you on this picture then I’m not sure what will. Perhaps that of its director Steven Spielberg? Or that of it’s star Daniel Day-Lewis? I needn’t even mention the supporting cast of  Joseph Gordon Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Jackie Earle Haley (and those are just the people in the cast with three names). A lot of people today see trailers for films like this and War Horse and scoff, too snobby for melodrama, to cynical to care but I eat this stuff up like Lewis drink’s a Milkshake. Check it out:

Trailer Trash: Seven Psychopaths

Let’s be honest here; you’ve either never heard of this movie or you already really want to see it and have been waiting four years to do so. Back in 2008 In Bruges hit the screens and surprised everyone with just how hilarious and yet heartfelt it was. Then last year came The Guard, proving that it wasn’t just the McDonagh name or the Irish accents that made In that much fun; it was the script and the stars that did that.

Thankfully then his second film, Seven Psychopaths has both: the film’s script was highly lauded and landed a place on the Black List (The semi-official ranking of the best un-optioned, un-produced screenplays floating around in the ether) back in 2008 and the stars… well they speak for themselves, or at least the trailer speaks for them so lets just look at that:

Trailer Trash – Argo

Argo is as the new promo panel says, ‘based on a recently declassified true story’; which is both a witty little line and factually authentic, in many ways describing exactly the kind of territory that the film itself will be mining. That true story it seeks to tell has been all over the news since its release a few years back and is well covered in the trailer itself, so i Won’t bore you with my reiteration.  As Argo was one of the movies I insisted you all look out for this year it would be remiss of me not to pimp its trailer and that’s why i’m here, so check it out after the jump:

Trailer Trash – Carnage

I think in this case the title says it all. Originally I was disappointed that the studio had seemingly shortened it from the original, rather epic sounding ‘Gods of Carnage‘ but now that I’ve seen it in action I can appreciate this new, truncated version a little more; there’s nothing high and mighty about this movie or it’s characters, it’s just mess, human mess and gloriously so.

Locked room drama’s can become stale without the requisite amount of drama, but I can’t see that being a problem here: Polanski’s direction is set to be stunning (even if he edited from a prison cell), the script seems solid (based on its theatrical runs) and the cast, fwoah what a cast; mark my words, there will be Oscars. It’s not exactly going to be an enoyable night out at the cinema but it should be a great one nonetheless.

Within the same year of her passing Elizabeth Taylor’s opus of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf may too be bested and removed from it’s throne. Let’s hope.

Trailer Trash – The Ides of March

“Who is it in the press that calls on me?
I hear a tongue shriller than all the music
Cry ‘Caesar!’ Speak, Caesar is turn’d to hear.”

“Beware the ides of March!”

“What Man is that?”

“A Soothsayer bids you beware the ides of March”

Julius Caesar, The Bard

So no, if you were wondering whether or not I had made a typo in the title you now have your answer. When naming his latest directorial effort George Clooney didn’t decide to create his own language, rather he just borrowed some of the Bard’s distinctive dialogue. In fact it seems that he has borrowed a little more than that from Julius Caesar for his his latest film, which tells the story of a high-minded political leader (Played by Clooney himself) set to take on a hectic race at the democratic primaries before an entanglement of loyalties with his prodigious but naive media manager -potentially- brings him down in what looks set to be a stunning ‘Et tu, Gosling’ moment. But I should stop summarizing and simply let you see the adaptation in action.

Trailer Trash – Mission:Impossible – Ghost Protocol

I’m someone who has never been excited by the Mission Impossible franchise, not even while watching the films themselves, however I have been following this fourth feature in the franchise with some interest thanks to the involvement of PIXAR’s Brad Bird The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) behind the camera; and so I was excited to see the trailer released today and even more excited by what I saw inside it, which already makes this the best Mission Impossible movie yet. So without any further ado, here is said trailer:

Exciting, no?
